Teachers in Greece - 3rd TPM

1o Gymnasio Acharnon welcomed its European partners between September 7 and September 11, 2019.

The 7th and 11th of September were the days of arrival and departure of our Spanish (Colegio Aurelio Gomez, UNIVERSIDAD DE BURGOS, IES TEGUISE), Cypriot (Regional Gymnasium of Livadia ) and Cretan (5o Gymnasio Chanion) partners.

On September 7, the partners explored the flavour and character of popular wines produced in various parts of Greece with the help of an oenologist.

On September 8, the team visited the winery "Tetramythos" near Diakopto at Peloponese were organic wines are produced. The grape varieties include black of Kalavryta, malagusia, roditis, agiorgitiko, merlot, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon. We toured the winery and took part in a tasting of the wines.

Then we went to Distomo by train (Odontotos), where we visited the Kalavryta Holocaust Museum. Later we visited the monastery called Mega Spileo of Kalavryta. The monastery was built in 362 AD and is considered the oldest in Greece. During the revolution of 1821 the monastery was a center of resistance against the Turkish conquerors.

On September 9, our partners got acquainted with the Greek island culture. They visited Hydra, Poros and Aegina.

In Hydra, the partners learned about the Greek Revolution of 1821 and how the Hydra contributed to it. They heard about the Admirals Miaouli, Ikonomou, Tobazides, Tsamados, Shaktouris and the firebrands Matrizos, Pipinos and Vaticanotis. They visited the historical museum, learned about the ancient history of the island from the late Neolithic period to the present day and tasted traditional products of the island.

The next stop was Poros, which is actually two islands, Spheria and Kalavria, separated by a narrow strip of sea. We saw the historic clock on the hill, a gift from Ioannis Papadopoulos and the navy's recruitment center. We toured the streets of the island, bought local products and continued our trip to Aegina.

In Aegina we visited the temple of Aphea Athena, who was the model for the Parthenon and the monastery of Saint Nektarios in order to get acquainted with the ancient and new Greek religion, Christianity.

On September 10, the partners met in Athens in order to evaluate the program so far and to organise its further development. Then we toured the Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis Hill.
